E-Polarized Diffraction by Dielectric Wedge

Geometrical optics (GO), the most widely used tool in analysis of high frequency electromagnetic problems, provides the first term of an asymptotic series solution to the Maxwell's equations [1]. It is implemented completely by employing the ordinary ray-tracing technique. To include the second asymptotic term systematically, Keller [2] suggested a generalization of the Fermat's principle on di...

Casimir Effect for a Dielectric Wedge

The Casimir effect is considered for a wedge with opening angle α, with perfectly conducting walls, when the interior region is filled with an isotropic and nondispersive medium with permittivity ǫ and permeability μ. The electromagnetic energy-momentum tensor in the bulk is calculated, together with the surface stress on the walls. A discussion is given on the possibilities for measuring the i...

An Improved Numerical Method for Scattering from Dielectric Rough Surfaces

The need for numerical methods in studying electromagnetic scattering from rough surfaces is well established. The most commonly used numerical method is the surface integral equation method and its solution by the method of moments (MoM). Conventional implementation of MoM requires O(N^3) operations, where N is the number of surface unknowns. When N is large, as frequently encountered in study...

Surface Fields on the Source-Excited Dielectric Wedge

Approximate surface fields due to a plane-wave solution and a local-mode solution are compared. The plane-wave solution, which is new, is shown to agree well with experiment. The local-mode solution, which often has been applied to tapered waveguides and antennas, fails near the cutoffs of the surface waves.

Generation of higher-order optical vortices by a dielectric wedge.

Diffraction of a Gaussian beam with a system of successively located optical wedges is considered. It is shown that the system is able to form higher-order optical vortices.
